Commissioned for the 2018 Kannapolis Middle School Band under the direction of Jennifer Merry Shatley (Kannapolis, North Carolina)

Eagles Take Flight! was written to celebrate Kannapolis Middle School in Kannapolis, North Carolina serving as the school’s official fight song.  The march was designed to be energetic from start to finish.  While keeping many aspects of a traditional concert march, some contemporary ideas have been incorporated into the composition.

Hatsuhi Sunrise (Percussion Ensemble)

Hatsuhi (Hat-sue-he) is the Japanese tradition of waking early to see the first sunrise of the new year.  On New Year’s Day, Japanese families will usually have a large traditional breakfast to celebrate “first sun”.  “Hatsuhi Sunrise” was created to honor this Japanese tradition.

“Hatsuhi Sunrise” was commissioned for the 2018 H. M. Arndt Middle School Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Kevin R. Townsend (Hickory, North Carolina).

Published by RWS Music Company and distributed by C. L. Barnhouse (2019)

Hickory Ridge Holiday (Concert Band)

Commissioned for the Hickory Ridge Wind Ensemble under the Direction of Chris White by the Hickory Ridge Band Boosters (Harrisburg, North Carolina)

Hickory Ridge Holiday was written to honor the wonderful work being done with the band program at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina.  Chris White (Hickory Ridge High School Director of Bands) has been with the band program just prior to the schools opening until now.  Under his leadership, the band program has truly thrived!  As a friend and colleague, I am excited to write Hickory Ridge Holiday for the 2017-18 Hickory Ridge Band program and their director Mr. White.  The beginning represents a newness to a program that is about to be established.  During the work, I wanted the themes to experience different styles and textures representing the accomplishments and challenges the Hickory Ridge band program has lived.  Simply put, this composition is a celebration!

To Reach Through The Sky (Concert Band)

Commissioned in memory of Edd Powell (Cabarrus County, North Carolina)

To Reach Through the Sky has been commissioned to serve as a memory of Edd Powell who lived a life as a dedicated husband, father, teacher, mentor, and friend.  Mr. Powell committed a career to education teaching middle and high school bands in the Carolinas, experiencing many successes over the years.  This composition has been based on the inspiration that Mr. Powell shared with anyone who met him and utilizes the hymn “Abide With Me” which Mr. Powell was most fond of.

A truly remarkable teacher does more than just teach, they invest into their students.  The beginning of the work represents the beginnings experienced prior to teaching.  In order to teach, one must learn and be prepared to always learn throughout life.  The next section of the composition creates an environment of the students learning from their teacher.  A dialogue was developed using the “Abide With Me” hymn theme between the teacher and students.  A defining moment takes place as the students have taken what they have learned to become part of them.  A shift occurs in which the students mourn the loss of their former teacher.  Mourning is somewhat brief as the students remember what they have learned to share with others as their former teacher’s lessons will forever be part of who they have become.  More than just music, band directors teach life lessons, passion, emotion, and so much more.
