Cherished Saint (Concert Band & Vocal Solo)

Cherished Saint is inspired by Dr. Gena Poovey and her many years of service to the Department of Music at Limestone College (Gaffney, South Carolina).  As I have gotten to know Dr. Poovey, I quickly discovered the level of pride and dedication she selflessly gives to her Limestone family.  Through her hard work and dedication, she has experienced many accomplishments and faced many challenges.  The idea of Cherished Saint is intended to paint a different picture of Limestone.  Using various fragments of the school’s alma mater, I attempted to recreate Dr. Poovey’ s personal journey that placed her in the path of numerous challenges and sometimes defeat.  The one thing about Dr. Poovey that has been unwavering is her hard work and countless hours dedicated to the students, faculty and staff at Limestone College and its musical success.  The final statement represents her triumphs and life-long partnership with a place she loves so dearly.  Through this composition, I name Dr. Poovey as Limestone’s Cherished Saint.

Ghillie Dhu "Gill-e Dew" (Concert Band)

Ghillie Dhu (Gill-e Dew) “Elf of the Forest” is inspired by a creature from Scottish Folklore. A lonely male fairy, the Ghillie Dhu was usually friendly and quiet, but occasionally wild in character. He was also known to have a gentle piety to children. The Ghillie Dhu lived in a birch wood within the Gairloch and Loch a During area of the north-west highlands of Scotland. He is depicted as dark haired and clothed in leaves of moss. Typically, the Ghillie Dhu did not like it when people would enter his forest yet was helpful to children that might be lost.

Merlin the Magnificent (Concert Band)

Merlin the Magnificent is inspired by a medieval legend best known as a wizard.  Legend has it that Merlin was born of a mortal woman but received his powers and abilities from a non-human being.  Over time, Merlin matures and develops into an advisor for King Author.  Merlin the Magnificent hopes to recreate the power and wonder that makes up the wizard.  The main theme of the work travels through many forms just as Merlin did in his time.

Super Sly Spy was written with classic movie spies in mind.  While you will not hear actual themes from famous spy movies, you will hear ideas that remind you of these cinematic greats.  Imagine those typical movie spies that have become icons based on their clever ideas, cool gadgets and awesome technology.

Storming the Keep (Concert Band)

Storming the Keep was inspired by the “keep” at the famous Rochester Castle in England.  The “keep” for any castle is the strongest and securest part.    The storming of Rochester Castle refers to a time in the early 1200’s when King John set forth to take back the building from rebels that had overtaken it in a previous battle.  Storming the Keep starts with a time of darkness.  At the beginning of my work, the keep has already been over taken by rebels.  A great siege begins at measure 27 (marked as the storm begins).  At measure 60 the passion for the great building that has just been reclaimed sets in.  The section at measure 102 is a celebration for the reclaimed keep.  Measure 117 is marked as remembering the storm.  Stories are passed down to younger generations so the great siege will never be forgotten.

Summoning the Forgotten Sounds of Joy (Concert Band)

Summoning the Forgotten Sounds of Joy is a work that I have taken great pride in writing.  Johann Sebastian Bach was a musical genius of his time.  His compositions have endured the test of time and are still being performed today.  Summoning the Forgotten Sounds of Joy celebrates two of J. S. Bach’s works, Little Fugue in G Minor and Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.  As I developed this composition, I wanted to take the listener on a journey using the themes from these two compositions.  The beginning is intense and chaotic leading to the continued development of both themes.  As the work develops, the themes have moments of tension finally leading to great resolve.  JOY!  After this “Joy” is rediscovered, we must think about our future and never forget the meaningful impact that music can make on humanity.
