The Mockingbird Project by Joseph Benjamin Earp World Premiere Friday, October 27th, 2023 5:30 p.m. Kent Sills Band Hall Mississippi State University (Starkville, Mississippi) Premiered by the Hinds Community College Wind Ensemble Dr. Joseph Earp, Conductor “The Mockingbird Project” was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association and the Mississippi Music Teachers Association for their 2023 State Conference. The inspiration for this piece started when I pulled into my parking space beside the Hinds Community College Muse Band Hall over the summer. As I started to get out of my car, I noticed a mockingbird, the state bird of Mississippi, perched on one of the sidewalk rails. I immediately heard what would become the opening statement played by a solo flute in the first measure of this composition. Starting with this simple motive, the piece continues to develop throughout as the “mockingbird – flute solo in measure one” imitates different sounds as mockingbirds are known to do. SPARTACUS RISING by Joseph Benjamin Earp Premiered by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Middle School Band Students as part of the 2023 CMS Middle School Virtual Band Project. Thursday, June 15th, 2023 Spartacus (c. 103-71 BC) was a Thracian gladiator. The Thracian people were Indo-European-speaking people who inhabited large parts of Southeast Europe in ancient history. A gladiator was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Spartacus was one of the escaped slave leaders in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic.
