“HURRAH!” was inspired by North Carolina’s State song, “The Old North State” (adopted in 1927/unofficial state song since 1835). The lyrics to “The Old North State” were written in 1835 by Judge William Gaston. As I am a native of North Carolina and lived there most of my life, the lyrics brought special meaning to me and will to so many. This work has been commissioned by the Wachovia Winds Youth Wind Ensemble for the NC Concert Band Music Consortium (One of Seven new works) under the artistic direction of Danny Green and conductors Alex AsKew, Matthew Brusseau, Daniel Campbell, Derrick James, Robert Johnston, Quincy Lundy and Justin Summers. May this new work for concert band represent North Carolina and the journey taken by all who have lived there. HURRAH!
First verse and chorus from “The Old North State”
"Carolina! Carolina! Heaven's blessings attend her!
While we live we will cherish, protect and defend her;
Though the scorner may sneer at and witlings defame her,
Our hearts swell with gladness whenever we name her.
Hurrah! Hurrah! The Old North State forever!
Hurrah! Hurrah! The good Old North State!
