SPARTACUS RISING by Joseph Benjamin Earp Premiered by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Middle School Band Students as part of the 2023 CMS Middle School Virtual Band Project. Thursday, June 15th, 2023 Spartacus (c. 103-71 BC) was a Thracian gladiator. The Thracian people were Indo-European-speaking people who inhabited large parts of Southeast Europe in ancient history. A gladiator was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Spartacus was one of the escaped slave leaders in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. HURRAH! by Joseph Benjamin Earp Premiered by the Wachovia Winds (North Carolina) Conducted by Justin Summers Saturday, May 27, 2023 Stevens Center (University of North Carolina School of the Arts) Winston Salem, North Carolina “HURRAH!” was inspired by North Carolina’s State song, “The Old North State” (adopted in 1927/unofficial state song since 1835). The lyrics to “The Old North State” were written in 1835 by Judge William Gaston. As I am a native of North Carolina and lived there most of my life, the lyrics brought special meaning to me and will to so many. This work has been commissioned by the Wachovia Winds Youth Wind Ensemble for the NC Concert Band Music Consortium (One of Seven new works) under the artistic direction of Danny Green and conductors Alex AsKew, Matthew Brusseau, Daniel Campbell, Derrick James, Robert Johnston, Quincy Lundy and Justin Summers. May this new work for concert band represent North Carolina and the journey taken by all who have lived there. HURRAH! First verse and chorus from “The Old North State” "Carolina! Carolina!
